Worths Nations Top Wealth Advisors are selected based on experience education certifications fiduciary status compliance record wealth management services methods of compensation and scope of current business. For more information visit www.worth.comindex.phpabout-worth. Candidates for the Philadelphia Business Journal and Barrons were determined by The Winners circle. Candidates were valued on criteria such as assets under manage- ment revenues experience and record of regulatory compliance and complaints. Candidates were further vetted based on in-depth interviews and discussions with management peers and customers as well as professional achievements and community involvement. The Winners Circle does not receive compensation from participating firms or their affiliates financial advisors or the media in exchange for rankings. In addition to the criteria used for the Barrons article and the Philadelphia Business Journal Wealth Manager magazine takes into consideration service to industry organizations and mentoring to others. Third-party rankings from rating services or publications are no guarantee of future investment success. Working with a highly-ranked advisor does not ensure that a client or prospective client will experience a certain level of performance or results. These rankings should not be construed as an endorsement of the advisor by any client nor are they representative of any one clients evaluation. Reg Rep Magazine Advisors are ranked by assets under management effective Nov. 1 2011. Only those advisors for whom a majority of assets correspond to retail clients were eligible for the list. The principle behind the Financial Times 400 is to focus on investors. Financial advisers were assessed from the perspective of current and prospective investors. The FT rewarded attributes that investors care about or should care about and not the value of those advisers or bodies. The methodology is quantifiable and objective. In autumn 2012 the FT solicited advisers practice information from the 40 largest US broker-dealers and requested data for each groups most elite advisers. By working with organizations instead of individuals the FT was able to obtain verified adviser data instead of relying on self-reporting thus increasing credibility. The FT assessed those with more than 10 years of experience and 250m or more in assets under management AUM brokerages had no subjective input The formula used is based on six broad factors and calculates a numeric score for each adviser. Areas of consideration include adviser AUM asset growth years of experience industry certification Finra compliance record and online accessibility AUM signals experience managing money and client trust. AUM growth rate Growing assets is a proxy for performance and for asset retention and ability to generate business Years of experience indicates experience managing assets in different economic and interest rate environments. Compliance record provides evidence of past client disputes. A string of complaints can indicate problems. Industry certifications CFA CFP etc show technical and industry knowledge and obtaining these designations shows a professional commitment to investment skills. Online accessibility illustrates commitment to providing investors with easy access and transparent contact information.AUM and asset growth comprise roughly 80-85 per cent of each advisers score. While each adviser earned an individual score and could be ranked against another the FT 400 is presented as an elite group not a competitive ranking. Annually more than 50000 people from around the world tour the National Christmas Centers 15 exhibits to delight in holiday wonder- ment no matter the season. Established in 1998 the National Christmas Center is appropriately locat- ed in Paradise a small town surrounded by Lancasters Pennsylvania Dutch coun- try where the Germans first brought their Christmas traditions to America in the 19th century. Morrison created the museum to preserve and share Christmas memories as well as to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. DREAMS COME TRUE I remember as a young boy walking on Market Street in Philadelphia to look at the window displays during Christmastime said Morrison. On Christmas Eve Id go to bed with an empty stocking and wake up to see the tree decorated and that Santa had visited. It was just magical. Theres nothing like Christmas in a childs imagination. Even as an adult Morrison never lost his childlike fascination for the holiday. Thirty years ago his two former partners built the Dickens Christmas Village that is now lo- cated on the third floor of Macys in Phila- delphia. While its a delight to tour the Dickens exhibit nothing compares to the National Christmas Center. Lauded by the History Channel and Martha Stewarts Christmas pro- gram and called one of the Most Christmassy Places in America by the Travel Channel National Christ- mas Center is a fantasy land that would even impress Walt Disney. A family from Australia was on their first trip to America related Morrison. They told me there were three things they had to see while they were here the Statue of Liberty the Grand Canyon and the National Christmas Center Whatever your yuletide wish chances are you will find it expressed at the museum. On your self-guided tour of the attraction you will ex- perience all the facets of Christ- mas from its Biblical origins to the beloved traditions that have been evolving for hundreds of years. Morrison says he built many of the exhibits through the eyes of a child. For example he re-created his childhood memory of lying on the floor watching his train go around the track that circled his familys Christmas tree in 1946. In this ex- hibit visitors gaze at the ultimate electric train set circling the fabri- cated trunk of a huge Christmas tree adorned with thousands of orna- ments. In other rooms you can gaze at an authentic scene straight from a 1950s Christmas morning and step into a Woolworths five-and-dime store with shelves crammed with vintage Christmas toys and mer- chandise from the 1930s 40s and 50s. A longtime collector Morrison hunted down and purchased each item one at a time. CHESTERCOUNTY-LIFE.COM NovemberDecember 2015 17 SANTA LIVES If you have any doubt that Santa Claus is real the National Christmas Center will provide all the proof you need The white- bearded Morrison who resembles the right jolly old elf and has been inducted into the International Santa Claus Hall of Fame firmly believes that Santa Claus carries on the ministry of Saint Nicholas whose love of children dates back nearly 1700 years. He points to a poem that is on display at the museum and was obtained from the New-York Historical Society. Dating back to 1810 the poem depicts Saint Nicholas as the original Santa Claus. In addition to nearly 200 images of San- ta that depict how the Christmas icon has evolved over the centuries the museum dis- plays a copy of the original handwritten let- ter from Virginia OHanlon the young girl who wrote to The New York Sun in 1897 asking if Santa Claus is real. Visitors can also hear Virginia read her letter in a video that is not available anywhere else accord- ing to Morrison. Also remarkable is the desk where Morrison says Clement Moore prob- ably wrote his famous poem The Night Before Christmas. Similar to the Dickens Christmas Village the museums Tudor Towne replicates a whim- sical English village with 125 animal figurines in Old World costumes. Its like walking through the pages of a storybook Morrison tells children before they enter the exhibit. The dreamy world continues in Santas North Pole workshop where animated elves make it a magically moving experience. During the holidays a real-life Santa makes appearances at the National Christmas Cen- ter on Thursdays through Sundays. Children are welcome to sit on his lap and tell him their Christmas wish list. Pots bubbling atop the family stove in Ardmore multiplied as demand mushroomed. BY APRIL ODAY CHESTERCOUNTY-LIFE.COM NovemberDecember 2015 27 A fascinating transition in tastes both in- clination and yumminess is taking place in kitchens coast to coast. Countless folks and families are choosing artisanal cuisine instead of fast food. Carlinos always ahead of the curve leads this trend in the region. Why Because its culinary selections are delicious beautifully presented and prepared by hand. To the Carlino family this is not a new phe- nomenon. It is the very spirit of their business. Lets go back a few hundred years. In It- aly an artigiano or skilled craft worker pro- duced functional and decorative household goods. They were either business owners or journeymen and apprentices. In America ar- tisans dominated the creation of consumer goods prior to the Industrial Revolution. Today the term is bandied about in profu- sion and confusion. Carlinos however embodies the essence of artisanal craftsmen. For six generations the Carlinos grew and nurtured fruits vegetables livestock and game on their 300-acre farm in Abru- zzo Italy. They cured meat dried tomatoes baked crusty loaves of bread and cured ol- ives in oil. The kitchen was enveloped in rich bouquets of homemade sauces pasta bread and sweet delicacies. Carlinos Old World recipes so savored in the past tempt palates to this day. Its im- portant to note that the term artisanal yet to be a household word is what the Carlino raison dtre was then and still is today. As compliments spread Carlinos Home- made Pasta Co. products were sold beyond the Main Line at the Downingtown Farmers Market. In 1983 an Ardmore store opened and flourished. Not only neighbors but prestigious hotel restaurants as well served Carlinos signature dishes. Seven years ago West Chester shoppers found a new way to eat when Carlinos arrived on Market Street. The stores success is advanced by a profit- able catering company directed by Angela Carlino Milani a third-generation devotee of her grandmother Mama Carlino. However Dianne was flipping through real estate books one day and a home piqued her interest. She suggested taking a peek and then karma took over. Their realtor had another client in search of the perfect home. Their first deal fell through and the family fell in love with the Breslers home. It was meant to be says Dianne. We bought this house three years ago and made a few cosmetic touches such as paint and window treatments to personalize it. In addition the Breslers chose Dilworths to install a tile back- splash and replace several cabinets in the kitchen. We wouldnt have considered another organization based on positive past experience remarks Dianne. I first found the family-owned company after an unpleasant predicament with a contractor. I conducted extensive re- search and was impressed with a list of 50 satisfied customers Dave Dilworth showed me. If all of these people were willing to endorse Dilworths I was convinced. As that project neared completion we told Dave we would call on him in the future to finish our basement. This raw multipurpose space was a big factor in the decision to buy. SHIBER When loved ones gather for the holidays its a time of contentment presents and yes wreaths of smiles. If those smiles are hidden there may be a reason. Though quite happy the person could be embarrassed to exhibit a problem mouth for all to see. Joy concealed by a clinched jaw or protective hand dilutes cheerful response to the good times of life. Jason Petkevis DMD and Dawson Acad- emy graduate is devoted to eliminating the need to suppress glad hearts and good humor. Today people regardless of age or gender want a naturally beautiful smile. It improves facial expression and provides a significant boost to self-esteem and confidence. No two smiles are alike continues the cosmetic dentist. One may show more upper teeth and another more lower. No two people wish for the same smile. Our process evaluates many parameters including smile line overall function and golden proportions which are important in determining size and shape of teeth. Some patients seek cosmetic dentistry to achieve the look they have dreamed of forever. Others experience deterioration to their teeth over time resulting in a less than ideal esthetic. Numerous catalysts are responsible for change or distortion of the natural glow of childhood grins. The bite may not align. Teeth could be broken chipped or missing. Genetics orth- odontia accidents or thumb sucking can af- fect smiles. According to Dr. Petkevis most problems stem from functional maladies. Fond of analogy he compares proper use of the mouth to automobile tire performance. Your car should have four balanced tires. If unbal- anced youre utilizing two or three tires. There is more stress on certain points and steering may be difficult. Its the same with teeth. You may not experience immediate difficulties but over time unevenly distributed forces will sure- ly cause obstacles. There are many cosmetic dental enhance- ments to restore and create coveted smiles. To determine the proper course of action to achieve an attractive new smile Dr. Petkevis and his team perform a 17-part examination to ascertain dental health. After proper health is established he points out patients who wish to explore a smile makeover are ready for their close-ups. Photos and impressions are obtained. They select longer or shorter teeth and other design specifics. This is an exciting collaborative process. Next a consultation is conducted to re- view results of the patients examination. Then a customized model of the proposed enhancements is created to serve as a guide for changes to be formed in the mouth. From the model temporary restorations are placed on the patients dentition to be used as a pro- totype in re-establishing the bite. The resto- rations act as a preview for the patients cos- metic improvements. When the test-drive is complete says Dr. Petkevis new photos and impressions are captured. The final step is to place permanent restorations in the mouth and the patient leaves our office with a wonderful new smile. Dental Distinction also provides dental implants an excellent solution for missing teeth. A true plus in this process is contour- ing gums to give a natural look. Few ob- servers will know the teeth arent real re- marks Dr. Petkevis. One of the most common esthetic im- provements in dentistry is teeth whitening. Dental Distinction offers three effective methods to whiten teeth prefabricated gel trays custom gel trays or in-office applica- tion. Regarding the tray options for whiten- ing patients wear the trays at home daily for as few as a couple hours a day for approxi- mately one week. The results can be dra- matic. A recent patient attests to the success of this treatment. He decided to whiten no- ticeably brownish teeth before his wedding. When he saw a bright smile glowing back at him in the mirror he immediately called Dr. Petkevis and scheduled an appointment to discuss additional smile improvements. Because its the holiday season you may consider giving yourself a new smile. Before any work is initiated Dr. Petkevis stresses the value of a healthy mouth. His experience has proven that bite smile line and overall usage begin at the temporomandibular joint TMJ. The crux of this dental viewpoint has roots in his education at The Dawson Acad- emy. There he achieved a comprehensive un- derstanding of how the TM joint muscles proprioceptive input lower and upper an- terior teeth and lower and upper posterior teeth are designed to function in symmetry. Aesthetic and complete dentistry begins with a thorough grasp of dental occlusion and function of the masticatory system. We verify the condition of the TMJ be- fore any recommendations plans or smiles are designed. Everything in the mouth must work in harmony. When the TMJ is sound and the bite stable we are confident smile makeovers will be effective and long lasting. Our multidisciplinary method offers a balanced approach to patient care through shared decision-making among medical specialists and emphasizes the ability to explore various options. Patients receive tailored recommendations for their therapy. I like to describe the Heart Team concept as the heart of heart care. Recent patients agree. A 57-year-old fe- male noticed a rapid heartbeat for at least five years. As a child she was diagnosed with a heart murmur. Her primary cardiologist conducted a series of tests including an echo- cardiogram cardiac catheterization and elec- trophysiology evaluation. Results indicated severe mitral regurgitation and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. He referred her to the Heart Team and Dr. Geller. Dr. Geller performed a complex mitral valve repair along with a radiofrequency Maze procedure to restore sinus rhythm. The mitral valve repair procedure involved reduc- ing the size of the annulus with a support ring tailoring abnormal parts of the leaflets and replacing ruptured support structures un- derneath the valve with artificial cords. Surgery was successful. Im doing won- derful now exclaims the happy patient. I trust my Crozer-Keystone Heart Team. Whatever they tell me Im going to do. I give them all the thanks in the world. I just love all of them. Another woman age 75 went to her fam- ily physician complaining of heart palpita- tions. A cardiology evaluation subsequently revealed an otherwise asymptomatic 6.5cm ascending aortic aneurysm with severe aortic insufficiency. She went to the Heart Team for treatment. Dr. Geller performed an aortic valve and root replacement with coronary re-implan- tation combined with a replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic hemi-arch. He used the advanced technique of hypothermic circulatory arrest with antegrade cerebral perfusion. The procedure involves cooling the patient to a low temperature draining all the blood from the body performing the surgery then reintroducing the blood back into the body and gradually rewarming the patient. The operation is performed while the CHESTERCOUNTY-LIFE.COM NovemberDecember 2015 105 patient is in a state of suspended animation and blood is continually delivered directly to the brain during the procedure to protect and ensure its function. The patient who is fully recovered was particularly impressed with Dr. Gellers train- ing and credentials. When I met him he was very personable thorough and easy to understand. He explained everything to me one-on-one. A third woman 63 with insulin-depen- dent diabetes mellitus hypertension and hyperlipidemia went to Delaware County Memorial Hospital with unstable angina. She was found to have a non-ST-segment el- evation myocardial infarction and was trans- ferred to Crozer-Chester Medical Center for cardiac catheterization which revealed se- vere triple-vessel coronary artery disease. The patients interventionalist in conjunc- tion with her primary cardiologist recom- mended she visit Dr. Geller. He performed an all arterial five-vessel bypass utilizing bilat- eral internal thoracic arteries and an endo- scopically-harvested radial artery. These procedures and others are avail- able 247. Crozer-Keystone Health Systems cardiothoracic surgeons treat the entire spec- trum of cardiac conditions ranging from cor- onary artery disease valve disorders aortic pathology arrhythmias and heart failure. In October Dr. Geller began seeing pa- tients at Crozer Medical Plaza at Brinton Lake for pre-surgical assessment and post- operative care. Going forward he stresses the Heart Teams approach to valve care. Our goal is to perform a repair in 90 to 95 percent of mitral valve disease cases. Even though a valve may be damaged patients can look forward to the best possible out- come with their own heart valve instead of an artificial implant. CHESTERCOUNTY-LIFE.COM NovemberDecember 2015 107 BY SUSAN I. SHIBER With 2016 just around the corner many in- dividuals and couples are contemplating em- barking on a new lifestyle to enjoy during retirement. Some are ready to make a move while they continue working or leading businesses. Others are in search of possibili- ties for later. After visiting the exceptional senior living communities in and around Chester County however they often opt to delay the wait and begin a next blissful step in their lives. If all the stars align they will find a place that offers not only the benefits of life care but the luxury they enjoy. With those objec- tives on the drawing board Dunwoody Vil- lage recently inaugurated Penrose Carriage Homes a group of 40 twin-style houses in a lovely 14-acre section of its wonderfully wooded setting. The continuing care retire- ment community conducted a market study that revealed an impressively large number of current and future retirees want spacious quarters. Making a transition from expan- sive home to tiny dwelling or apartment is not preferred. As an alternative less dramat- ic downsizing to a large comfortably com- modious residence is a growing trend. Penrose which is handsomely finished in stucco and stone has a two-car garage front and back covered porch terrace and a walk-out basement option. Ranging from 2105 to 4125 square feet the two-bed- room and den single- or two-story homes feature an open kitchen great room den mudroom walk-in closets and abundant storage. There is a gas fireplace and on-site whole campus generator for security during storm outages. Penrose proved its popularity in the early stages of development. Sales exceeded 50 percent as first foundations were poured. Charles and Diane Ladner actually pur- chased their two-story 4000-square-foot carriage home before ground was broken. The couple didnt even look elsewhere but Chuck admits as a member of the Dun- woody Village Board of Trustees he may be showing a bit of favoritism. Highlights of the Ladners well-planned home include built-in shelves in the great room a double French door from den to deck a customized formal dining room Charles and Diane Ladner entering their new home a week before moving day actually purchased their two-story 4000-square-foot carriage home before ground was broken. 108 Chester County Life CHESTERCOUNTY-LIFE.COM S E N I O R L I V I N G made possible by removing a wall laun- dry room and an elevator complete with wood-toned walls and telephone. There is a custom finished basement which allows ample storage space for items brought from their 5500-square-foot Berwyn house. Yes we must have room for Chucks 85 boxes of books chides Diane. Its important to have space for belong- ings you wish to keep or put away while you decide what stays or goes adds Chuck. Dunwoody Village also has a Resale Shop for people to donate pieces that may not fit in their home. When furnishings are sold the proceeds go to our Residents Associa- tion to help pay for programs and additions such as the recently purchased Steinway Sons Baby Grand piano. Dunwoody paid for half and the association handled the balance. The Ladners the first Dunwoody residents to move to a Penrose Carriage Home take a moment to look outdoors from their great room at the beautiful wooded setting. CHESTERCOUNTY-LIFE.COM NovemberDecember 2015 111 Other benefits noted by the Ladners include excellent health programs physi- cians and nurses a wide range of recre- ational activities a highly regarded reha- bilitation center and proximity of services. Life Care consistently rated five stars by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services allows them to change to a differ- ent level of health assistance with little to no increase in costs if health needs change. Dianes sister who has learning and physi- cal disabilities lives with the couple and knowing she will always be cared for is a major reassurance. Charlotte loves Dun- woody Village says Diane. She thrives on being around people going to dinner and exercising. When Princess Kate had her baby everyone started calling my sister Princess Charlotte. Im her guardian and this camaraderie delights us. As people age they become more sensi- tive and less judgmental points out Chuck. Allowances are made for others. We have residents on scooters utilizing walkers and in wheelchairs. It doesnt matter if a mind is slipping a bit or someone has difficulty see- ing or hearing. Everyone whether doctor dentist or CEO accepts deficits and easily interacts with their neighbors. Diane and Chuck take great pleasure in these interactions. They are making friends and sharing activities. Diane attends exer- cise classes five days a week and volunteers in the Resale Shop. In addition to his busy board activities Chuck is active in the for- eign affairs discussion group and practices his short game on the communitys 18-hole putting green when not at Merion Golf Club. The couple exemplify retirement at its best. Chuck was Chief Financial Officer for UGI a Fortune 500 company. He also served on the board of John Hancock In- vestments The Cove Creek Club and The Church of Saint Monica among others. His background dovetails with his Finance and Strategic Planning Committee membership at Dunwoody Village. The Ladners who are proud parents of four successful children are currently at- tending most of the activities at nearby Westtown School to cheer on their grand- children. Comparable applause is awarded to their carriage home and the distinctive amenities they share at Dunwoody Village. We go out to dinner every night and have settled into easy living notes Chuck. We have an exceptional home but there are no hassles usually associated with ownership. It was a wise decision to make the move while we can really appreciate everything there is to offer. Penrose Carriage Homes are not all thats new at Dunwoody Village. A 12MM renovation is under way to revi- talize the 40-year-old facility. Hallways are being renovated and electric and plumb- ing systems upgraded. Air conditioning has been replaced and new lighting flooring and dcor are being updated. All original homes now include a washer and dryer. When complete Dunwoody will resem- ble a brand new community concludes Chuck. This was definitely impor- tant to me in considering a new school. But just as important as academic excel- lence is the strength and warmth of a community on a human level. Tower Hill has both these aspects. This matters to me as an educator. Students excel when we challenge and support them and when we enable them to be active citizens in their school and the wider community. Character education and community service have always been an integral part of Tower Hills curriculum but moving forward Speers commits to collaboration with others in the area regionally nation- ally and internationally. Mid- dle School students will have opportuni- ties to travel abroad to Puerto Rico Que- bec Italy France and Spain and Upper School students regularly visit Australia and France. Mr. Miller is a passionate motorcyclist having traveled across the country for many biking events over the years and dedicates his time to Goodwill during the week. Needless to say he was a man on the move. Then came the day he inexplicably slowed down. Mr. Miller began experiencing a deep chest ache and daily fatigue that he could barely make it through the day. Over the course of three months he became fed up with lying in bed so with the help of his family he finally visited his primary care physician Jennifer Keah MD at Brandywine Family Practice in Exton. He was sent for a series of tests by Dr. Keah and referred to cardiologist Alexander Shpilman MD Di- rector of Nuclear Cardiology at Brandywine Hospi- tal for a catheterization. During this time Dr. Shpil- man discovered that only 94 percent of Mr. Millers heart was working properly. Dr. Shpilman referred Mr. Miller to Dr. Raman for a coronary bypass which has him back on his feet and moving again. He was able to return to work in no time and currently is building up his strength again through recovery in cardiac rehabili- tation. He is counting down the days until he can ride his bike again. While in recovery from surgery to remove the tumor his blood oxy- gen levels remained below normal. Although Ted joked that the machine used to measure oxygen levels was faulty he followed in- structions upon discharge to visit his prima- ry care physician who then recommended he see a pulmonologist. The pulmonologist sent Ted for a CT scan which showed a small spot nodule on his lung. Soon after further testing of the nodule confirmed the diagnosis of lung can- cer. Even though this was unexpected as I had no symptoms I was more disappointed than shocked to learn I had lung cancer said Ted who kicked a 50-year-long smok- ing habit eight years ago. Smoking is the major risk factor in more than 80 percent of all lung cancers. Ted turned to the Cancer Center of Paoli Hospital part of The Main Line Health MLH Lung Cancer Program where a multispecialty team including hematologist and medical oncologist Sandra Urtishak MD and radiation oncologist Gregory Ochsner MD coordinated a personalized proactive treatment plan that began with six weeks of chemotherapy one day per week and radiation therapy five days per week delivered simultaneously followed by surgery to remove the tumor and other can- cerous tissue. A final round of chemother- apy was administered to ensure no cancer remained. Despite Teds diagnosis Dr. Urtishak was very optimistic of a good outcome. Its re- ally incredible how much chemotherapy radiation and the medications designed to help with the side effects have advanced said Dr. Urtishak. We have more options today than ever before to optimally treat pa- tients and ultimately save lives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths in both women and men. In fact each year more people die of lung cancer than of colon breast and prostate cancers combined. As with most cancers lung cancer is curable when found at an early stage. The prob- lem is that most lung cancers are detected only when symptoms such as shortness of breath or a chronic cough arise. By that time its often too late for life-saving treat- ment. While this scenario seems daunting the future looks promising as lung cancer screening and treatment continue to prog- ress and multidisciplinary treatment offers an opportunity to personalize patient care said Patrick Ross MD PhD Chairman of the Department of Surgery MLH. In 2011 for example a national lung cancer screening study determined that a low-dose CT scan was effective in detecting Surviving and Thriving after Lung Cancer PROMISING ADVANCES IN SCREENING AND TREATMENT AVAILABLE AT MAIN LINE HEALTH Edward Ted Lawrence and his wife are grateful for the care he received throughout his journey to recovery. CHESTERCOUNTY-LIFE.COM NovemberDecember 2015 141 early-stage lung cancer and reducing mor- tality from the disease by 20 percent. Since the release of these findings a number of na- tional organizations including the American Cancer Society and the American Lung As- sociation have embraced and recommended screening for patients deemed high risk. Lung cancer screening using a CT scan has become one of the most effective pre- vention tools in health care today added Dr. Ross. Paoli Hospital and the entire Main Line Health Lung Cancer Program are determined to bring awareness and accessi- bility of this testing to all people at high risk for developing the disease. For individuals like Ted who have lung cancer the MLH Lung Cancer Program is also committed to offering the most effec- tive treatment options for each individual. Surgery for example is often recommend- ed and in some cases the best option for a cure. In the past surgical procedures typi- cally involved a large incision to open up the chest wall to provide the surgeon access to the tumor. Today rapidly evolving technology and innovative surgical techniques offer many patients across Main Line Health the option to undergo removal of their tumor through minimally invasive procedures that are de- signed to preserve as much of the lung as possible and allow an easier and quicker recovery added Dr. Ross. Patients at Paoli Hospital have access to experts in minimally invasive techniques such as video-assisted thoracic surgery VATS which uses video cameras as well as robotic-assisted thoracic surgery which utilizes computer-aided 3D technology. Both involve only a few small in- cisions and typically result in less pain fewer complications and a reduced hospital stay. Non-surgical interventions have also grown more sophisticated. Photodynamic therapy PDT is a promising treatment for certain types of lung cancer that have not spread to other areas. In this treatment a drug is injected into a vein. This drug is absorbed largely by cancer cells which are destroyed once the substance is activated by a fiber optic laser. Main Line Health is now the coordinating facility for a prestigious multicenter registry designed to collect and share information related to PDT outcomes in an effort to advance its use on a global level. Stereotactic radiation therapy is another effective approach for some types of lung cancer. Stereotactic radiation uses advanced imaging technology to deliver high doses of radiation directly at the tumor with millime- ter precision thus preserving more healthy tissue. According to Won Chang MD radia- tion oncologist at the Cancer Center of Paoli Hospital the cure rate using this method in early lung cancer is almost equal to that of surgery. We are always evaluating newer tar- geted radiation therapies especially when the tumor is located near or in vital organs Pictured are Dr. Patrick Ross MD PhD Chairman of the Department of Surgery MLH patient Ted Lawrence and Patsy Skabla PA-C. PATRICK ROSS MD PhD CHAIRMAN OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY MLH 142 Chester County Life CHESTERCOUNTY-LIFE.COM H E A LT H C A R E said Dr. Chang. For patients that means we can reduce the number of sessions required for treatment while also limiting the risk of side effects. Lung cancer patients throughout MLH may also have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. MLH has been recognized by the National Cancer Institute NCI Commu- nity Oncology Research Program NCORP for its research focus. It is the only commu- nity-based cancer program in the Delaware Valley to receive this designation and one of only 34 recipients nationally. Dr. Urtishak believes clinical trials offer important options for lung cancer patients. Clinical trials involve the introduction of new medications and therapies to patients undergoing cancer treatment she said. Al- though participation is voluntary its impor- tant our patients have these opportunities. Ted and his wife are grateful for the care he received throughout his journey to re- covery. At Paoli the cancer care not only includes prevention early detection and ad- vanced treatment options but also patient support and education through recovery and beyond. The goal of Paolis Path to Survivorship program for example is to help patients transition to a life following treatment and to en- sure long-term health and quality of life and in the process develop a resource for research in cancer survivorship. From an emotional perspective many patients are scared and feel lost at the end of treatment explained survivorship program coordinator Kathleen Sacharian MSN CRNP. We as providers do a great job at supporting patients through the cancer treatment experience but we must continue that care and teach them how to start living afterward. Patients at Paoli are referred to Kathleen after they have finished cancer treatment. During this visit a Survivorship Needs Assessment is completed to determine the specific post-treatment issues a patient may be facing. With that information a customized Survivorship Care Plan is created that includes a summary of a survivors diag- nostic and treatment history and cites evidence-based guidelines for continued monitoring including preventive measures like diet and exercise and screening recommendations. The plan also maps out available local resources and services such as genetics fertility and integrative medicine consultations. Almost a year later and cancer-free Teds outlook is wonderfully optimistic. In addition to his team at Paoli Hospital he credits his wife Jane for helping him along the path to recovery. I had com- plete faith in everyone she said. They did everything possible to save my husbands life and I will be forever grateful. Patients who choose the Cancer Center of Paoli Hospital have access to outpatient cancer treatment such as chemotherapy at the Main Line Health Center at Exton Square and the Main Line Health Center in Collegeville. These locations allow many patients to stay as close to home as possible while receiving cancer care. For more information visit mainlinehealth.orgcancerlung.
