Her reasons are exceptionally clear and insightful, and point to the fact that she is uniquely qualified in psychotherapy, bio- feedback, and neurofeedback. “I’ve chosen to practice here because there is a lot of nec- essary overlap in health care. We work with patients that have physical issues, and pa- tients that have a hard time relaxing. Some- times they need hands-on approaches such as physical therapy, massage therapy, or acu- puncture. My patients are vulnerable, and I need to feel they are in a safe environment. At The Integrated Healing Center, I can refer patients to practitioners I know and trust to help them manage their physical conditions and feel supported. I really know each prac- titioner; we consult and collaborate with each other on a daily basis.” PROFESSIONAL SERVICES Dr. McCarel and her staff of three licensed psychologists provide their services indepen- dently or integrated with the variety of heal- ing services of The Integrated Healing Cen- ter. She remarks, “Our major role is helping people make friends with their body again, or maybe even for the first time.” They ac- complish this goal through a number of ther- apies and approaches; namely psychothera- py, biofeedback, and neurofeedback services for adults, adolescents, and children.  Nancy McCarel, PhD, BCB, BCN, Di- rector of the Practice, is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice since 1993. She is joined in her practice by professional team members: licensed clinical psychologist Katie Bhogal, PsyD, BCB; licensed clinical psychologist Tara Wheeler, PsyD, BCN; and licensed clinical psychologist Natalie Sheri- dan, PsyD. Dr. McCarel and her staff diagnose and treat a variety of symptoms triggered from anxiety, stress, depression, and physi- cal illness. She cites some of the most com- mon symptoms treated: insomnia, chronic physical pain, loss of energy, feeling anxious about relationships and making friends, and even thoughts about not living. They utilize the personal interaction of psychotherapy methods to help patients decrease symptoms from anxiety, depression, stress, or physical illness. Dr. McCarel says, “Psychotherapy helps a person overcome problems and im- proves their mental health and well-being. She remarks, “Our major role is helping people make friends with their body again, or maybe even for the first time.” We use evidence-based methods in therapy along with biofeedback and neurofeedback in treatment. This combination really makes us unique. And with the advantage of four licensed psychologists in the practice, we can blend a number of different therapy models.” The practice uses biofeedback extensive- ly. “People often find us when they conduct an Internet search on biofeedback,” reports Dr. McCarel. In a biofeedback session, elec- tronic equipment measures and monitors physiological processes such as heart rate, breathing patterns, muscle tension, and skin temperature. Biofeedback provides a win- dow into how the body is functioning in a way that the mind can understand and sub- sequently respond. As a training process, biofeedback enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of decreasing stress, and improv- ing health and performance. She says, “Bio- feedback is an eye-opener for patients. They experience the connections. It’s not subjec- tive, but a very objective measure. People truly realize the impact on their body and systems when discussing stressful situations and events.”
